Colloque organisé par le groupe de recherche « Médias et mémoire » (Centre Canadien
d’Etudes Allemandes et Européennes, Université de Montréal) avec la collaboration du Centre
de Recherche sur l’Intermédialité, de la Galerie Leonard & Bina Ellen (Concordia University) et
du Goethe-Institut.
Organised by the research group "Médias et mémoire" (Canadian Center for German and
European Studies, Université de Montréal), with the collaboration of the Centre for Research
on Intermediality, the Leonard and Bina Ellen Gallery (Concordia University), and the GoetheInstitut.
Comme peu d’autres, le cinéma de Harun Farocki nous invite à réfléchir sur le rapport
qu’entretient ce médium aux différents modes de reproduction technique, que ce soit la
photographie, les archives cinématographiques ou encore la vidéo. Ses travaux nous aident à
saisir la dimension « intermédiale » de ce qui, à travers l’existence massive de telles images,
devient de plus en plus partie prenante de notre mémoire sociale. C’est en ce sens que
plusieurs spécialistes européens et canadiens interrogeront au cours de cette journée d’étude
l’oeuvre multiforme de Farocki comme cinéaste et artiste vidéo. Le colloque inaugurera de
plus, en présence de l’auteur, une série de ses films « Hommage à Harun Farocki » au
Goethe-Institut du 19 octobre au 9 novembre 2007.
Like few others, the cinema of Harun Farocki invites us to reflect on the relation that this
medium has with various modes of technical reproduction, whether it be photography, archival
films or video. His works help us to grasp the dimension of intermediality which, through the
massive existence of such images, is becoming increasingly part of our social memory. It is in
this sense that several European and Canadian specialists will reflect during the course of this
conference on the multi-faceted work of Farocki as filmmaker and video artist. The workshop
will also inaugurate, in the presence of Harun Farocki, a series of films at the Goethe-Institut
from October 19 - November 9, 2007.
