PRESS KIT Week 28 LOSC Lille Métropole - Valenciennes FC Date & Time Sunday, March 18, 2012 - 21:00 Stadium Stadium Lille Métropole 03/16/2012 - Ligue de Football Professionnel - 2011/2012 - Ligue1.com Week 28 LOSC Lille Métropole - Valenciennes FC PREVIEW : LOSC LILLE MÉTROPOLE - VALENCIENNES FC LOSC Lille Métropole - Valenciennes FC Feature Preview Lille has been the place to be for goals this season and the champions need a result in the northern derby with Valenciennes, Ligue 1's second-worst away side, on Sunday to enhance their chances of finishing third. Third in the table ever since beating Lyon 3-1 in Week 11, a run of three matches without a win has seen the chasing pack close in on Rudi Garcia's side. In Week 27 Lille fell 2-1 at Lyon, all but putting an end to their hopes of retaining their Ligue 1 crown with the gap between themselves and leaders Paris Saint-Germain up to 11 points before Week 28. Prior to the weekend play, four clubs were stacked up within four points of Lille and midfielder Benoît Pedretti admits it's time to look over their shoulder. "We drew with Auxerre and we lost to Lyon, so we had the chance to make up points and compete for a top two finish," said the former French international. "Instead we're not collecting points and we've allowed the clubs behind to close up on us. It will be tight right until the end of the season and we need to react and win this weekend." The Lille-Valenciennes derby is traditionally a friendly rivalry, yet both sides are desperate for points. Garcia said: "What counts for us is winning the next match as it's a derby against Valenciennes. It's very important for us to start a positive run and move on. Anything other than a win against Valenciennes would be a damaging result for us." VAFC have managed a single away win all campaign, a 2-1 victory at Dijon in Week 22, and lost nine times away from their Stade du Hainaut fortress, which was penetrated in Week 27 by high-flying Saint-Etienne who came from behind to win 2-1 in a match both sides finished with ten men. VAFC midfielder Carlos Sanchez received his marching orders in the fourth minute for a nasty challenge on ASSE counterpart Fabien Lemoine and on Thursday the Colombian international was handed a nine-match ban. Sanchez's suspension is a further blow for Valenciennes coach Daniel Sanchez, still coming to terms with the ASSE loss that left VAFC in mid-table but an uncomfortable four points above the relegation places before the weekend play. Sanchez said: "Losing at home is costly. All the clubs are hanging in there and it's a very tight league. Up until now we'd kept our heads above water because of our home form. This defeat stopped us in our tracks but we'll keep on battling." Lille centre-half Mauro Cetto serves the final match of a two-game ban and that will encourage VAFC forward Vincent Aboubakar in his quest to score a first away goal for the club. Aboubakar is looking forward to facing his Cameroonian international team-mate Aurélien Chedjou: "He's a really good lad. In the national set-up he has always backed me and given me advice. I've got a lot of respect for him. He's one of the really good defenders around in Ligue 1 and is really strong. If I can dribble past him then that will make me happy. I've got to try it!" 48 goals have flown in at the Stadium Lille Métropole this season - 24 of them in the last four LOSC home games - and yet another sell-out crowd will be looking forward to more entertainment, although if there is to be another high-scoring thriller then the LOSC fans will be hoping their side emerge on the right end of it, having lost 5-4 to Bordeaux in Week 23 and drawn 4-4 with Nice in Week 19. 03/16/2012 Ligue de Football Professionnel - 2011/2012 - Ligue1.com 2 Week 28 LOSC Lille Métropole - Valenciennes FC LOSC Lille Métropole - Valenciennes FC - HISTORY: Lille have hosted Valenciennes 18 times in the top division. LOSC Lille Métropole - The 2010-11 season saw Lille break a host of club records as they swept to a Ligue1-French Cup double, bringing major silverware to the north of France for the first time in over half a century. - Lille had last won the league in 1954, and the Coupe de France in 1955, ending a trophy drought whose only consolations had been four Ligue 2 titles (1964, '74, '78 and 2000) and an Intertoto Cup (2005). - Lille have won two Ligue 1 crowns (1946, '54) and finished runners-up five times (1948, '49, '50, '51 and 2005). They have won the French Cup five times (1946, '47, '48, '53, '55), and were beaten finalists twice (1945, '49). - Their triumph sees them return to the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 2006-07, when they finished second to AC Milan in the group stage before being eliminated 2-0 on aggregate by Manchester United. - In the 2005-06 Champions League campaign Lille played all their home matches at the Stade de France in Paris, because their regular home - the Stadium Métropole Villeneuve d'Ascq - did not meet UEFA requirements. The club used neighbouring Lens' Stade Bollaert for its European matches in the 2006-07 season. - Lille earned an historic 1-0 win over Manchester United at the Stade de France in the 2005-06 Champions League and became the first French side to register an away win over AC Milan (2-0) the following year. - Lille finished season 2010-11 with the best attack in France (for the second year running), their 68 goals eclipsing second-placed OM's tally of 62. Born on November 21 1953, Sanchez is hoping to complete a full season in charge of a Ligue 1 club for the first time. - Valenciennes have never won the French Cup or League Cup, although they did reach the French Cup final in 1951, when they lost 3-0 to Strasbourg. - VA were relegated from Ligue 1 at the end of the 1992-93 season and the club's image was further tarnished by the match-fixing scandal that erupted after their Week 36 match versus Marseille (a 0-0 draw).
