Ce printemps, nous vous avons demandé ce qu’était Tangente à vos yeux. Vos
réponses ont été nombreuses et ont renforcé nos convictions. Tangente est
pour vous : un lieu où tout est possible, une pépinière pour les chorégraphes
émergents, un laboratoire intime pour l’expérimentation audacieuse, une
place d’échanges significatifs entre les artistes et les spectateur(e)s. Vous y
venez réfléchir, remettre en question, découvrir. À notre grand plaisir, vous
continuez d’apprécier l’intimité et d’avoir le sentiment de faire partie de la
famille Tangente.
Nous nous réinventons encore cette année ! Nos bureaux se trouvent dorénavant
au centre-ville. Notre salle de spectacle principale (temporaire) est le charmant
Studio Hydro-Québec du Monument-National. Nous développons également
plusieurs co-présentations avec l’Agora de la danse, Danse-Cité, MAI-Montréal
arts interculturels, et les festivals Quartiers danses, PHENOMENA et Accès Asie.

de trois années de nomadisme jusqu’à l’inauguration de

Depuis 1980, Tangente – premier lieu de diffusion en danse contemporaine
au Québec – se distingue comme un véritable laboratoire expérimental.
Plus de 1 500 chorégraphes visionnaires d’ici et d’ailleurs ont présenté, en
début de carrière, leur travail sur les planches de Tangente comme Mark
Morris, Wayne McGregor, Ginette Laurin, José Navas, Pierre-Paul Savoie,
Paul-André Fortier, Hélène Blackburn, Dave St-Pierre, Mélanie Demers,
Frédérick Gravel et bien d’autres. Nos saisons s’enrichissent sans cesse
des œuvres de jeunes innovateurs qui font de Montréal une plateforme
riche en créations contemporaines.
Tangente est en pleine transition et a de nouveaux défis stimulants. Notre
équipe redouble d’efforts pour pouvoir mener une campagne de financement commune avec l’École de danse contemporaine de Montréal et
Les Grands Ballets, et construire de nouveaux espaces d’enseignement, de
performances et résidences sur la place des Festivals, en 2014. Une visibilité
incroyable pour la danse au cœur du Quartier des spectacles.
Afin d’assurer la réalisation de ce grand projet et, en particulier, l’effervescente créativité de la relève montréalaise et québécoise, celle qui nous
démarque tant, appuyez Tangente ou devenez un bénévole d’affaires pour

We sent you a questionnaire this spring asking what Tangente
meant to you. So many of you replied ! Your responses renewed
our convictions. You told us we are : a place of possibilities, a
hothouse for young choreographers, an intimate laboratory
for bold experimentation, a place for meaningful exchange
between artists and audiences. You come here to reflect, explore,
discover. And much to our pleasure, you continue to love the
intimacy and to feel part of the Tangente family.

We are reinventing ourselves, again. Our offices are now located
downtown. Our main (temporary) venue is the charming Studio
Hydro-Québec at the Monument-National. We’ve embarked on
several collegial co-presentions with Agora de la danse, DanseCité, the MAI-Montréal, arts interculturels, and the Quartiers
danses, PHENOMENA and Accès Asie festivals.
Since 1980, Québec’s premiere dance presenting space Tangente has
been a beacon, a laboratory for contemporary dance creation. More
than 1,500 visionary choreographers from here and abroad have
performed their early work on our stage, artists such as Mark Morris,
Wayne McGregor, Ginette Laurin, José Navas, Pierre-Paul Savoie,
Paul-André Fortier, Hélène Blackburn, Dave St-Pierre, Mélanie
Demers and Frédérick Gravel among many others. Our artistic season
is continuously enriched by the new works of young innovators,
who are making Montréal an increasingly rich milieu for the most
inventive dancemakers.
It’s our 32nd season, the second of three nomadic years until we
cut the ribbon for our permanent home in the Quartiers des
spectacles. Everything is moving rapidly. Are you keeping up
with us ? Try not to miss a single programme in this rich and
eclectic season with its 48 choreographic creations. Just take
your place, open your mind and senses, and plunge into a bright
new vision of the world created by eloquent bodies in motion.
Tangente is immersed in a transitional period, full of stimulating
challenges. We are working double time to mount a major fundraising
campaign in close collaboration with the École de danse contemporaine
de Montréal and Les Grands Ballets, and so to construct new spaces for
teaching, performing and artistic residences in the place des Festivals,
to open in 2014. A magnificent window for dance will be opened in the
heart of the Quartier de spectacles.

L’accessibilité, la démocratisation et le décloisonnement de la danse de création sont au
coeur de la mission de Transatlantique Montréal et son festival Quartiers Danses qui célèbre
sa 10e édition du 12 au 23 septembre 2012. Pour une deuxième année à Tangente, Quartiers
Danses présente une programmation éclectique et dense avec plus de douze chorégraphes
émergents et établis, dont Marc Béland, Daniel Soulières, Jeff Hall, Claude Godin, Emmanuelle
LePhan et Elon Hoglund, Réal Bossé et Audrey Bergeron, Rosalie Famelart, Hélène Messier,

The democratization of dance and accessibility of original works are at the heart of the mission
of Transatlantique Montréal and its Quartiers Danses Festival, celebrating its 10th edition from
September 12 to the 23, 2012. For the second time at Tangente, Quartiers Danses presents a dense
and eclectic programme with more than a dozen established and emerging choreographers, among

Ersatz d’Adam et Ève, version post-apocalyptique. L et M sont peut-être les deux derniers
humains sur terre. Ils jouent ! Ensemble, ils narguent le néant, réinventent le chaos et flirtent
constamment avec un existentialisme kinesthésique.
A pseudo Adam and Eve in a weird post-apocalyptic episode. L and M are possibly the last two
human beings on earth. They are having fun together ! They scoff at oblivion, reinvent chaos and
constantly flirt with a kinaesthetic existentialism.

des différentes formes d’arts. Beautés étranges, instruments de musique détournés, chant du
cygne, marionnettes bipolaires et cadavres exquis au menu.
From the Greek pan (all) and horama (what one sees, a performance)
Prepare for an evening of zany ambiances from this multidisciplinary artist, in which poetry emanates
from the encounter between various art forms. Strange beauties, repurposed musical instruments,
swan song, bipolar marionettes and exquisite corpses are on the menu.

ISABELLE BOULANGER – LA GRANDE FENTE
Une composition inspirée du handball, pour sept joueurs. Dans cet espace de jeu dont tout
le monde ignore les règles, la camaraderie et la personnalité de chacun s’imposent. Pour cette
démonstration d’habileté, l’effort ultra-physique est requis. Ne vous y méprenez pas, ce n’est
pas si sérieux.
Performance puissante et excentrique ; assemblage d’éléments incompatibles, de voix éthérées,
échos et mémoires floues. Au cœur de l’action, l’évasion du grand-père estonien de Peter
Trosztmer et une sculpture mécanique qui forme l’environnement visuel et sonore. Lumière,
bruits et scénographie rappellent l’usine ; les mouvements sont crus, mécaniques, voire
acrobatiques. Cette pièce fait référence à l’héroïsme, la rédemption et la folie. Trosztmer nous
entraîne dans un récit fragmenté et délirant, où sa physicalité et son imagination décrivent
une histoire nouvelle, à la fois épique et prosaïque.
An eccentric and powerful solo performance ; an assemblage of disjointed events, disembodied voices,
echoes and hazy memories. At its heart is a tale of grandfather’s escape from Estonia and a machinelike sculpture that shapes the visual and sonic landscape. The sound, lighting and stage space are
reminiscent of a factory ; the movement is raw and mechanical – at times acrobatic. There are
references to heroism, redemption and madness as Trosztmer pulls us into a wild fragmented account,
where his physicality and imagination write a new history that is both epic and prosaic.
A composition inspired by handball, for seven players. In this playing area where everyone ignores the
rules, camaraderie and distinctive personalities are essential. For this demonstration of skill an extraphysical effort is required. But really, it’s not all that serious.

Le public circule autour d’un espace scénique délimité par un cercle d’argile tracé au sol et
une ambiance lumineuse tamisée. Dans ce scénario onirique, la promiscuité entre danseuse,
hautboïste et manipulateur sonore se dessine. Une pièce immersive et interdisciplinaire qui
traite de l’isolement. Enivrante.

The audience moves around the perimeter of a stage space with murky lighting that is defined by a
clay circle on the floor. In this dream-like setting, an interactive scenario takes shape between dancer,
oboist and sound manipulator. An immersive and interdisciplinary piece about isolation. Intoxicating.

Espace ennéagonal (neuf côtés), lumières vives, musique rythmée. Dans un système scénique
pivotant, un quatuor de danseuses se déplace de manière résolue et répétitive. Un angle de
vue nouveau à chaque fois, une image ressemblant à la précédente. Glissement du corpsmatière vers le corps sensible. Formalisme électro qui rend visible l’audible.

An electro formalism, rendering audible that which is visible. A nonagonal (nine-sided) stage is
defined by bright lighting. Pulsating music. A quartet of women resolutely repeat a movement
phrase. Viewed from a fresh angle each time, one image is reminiscent of another. As the piece
progresses, the body-as-material shifts towards that of a sentient body.

Une performance sur la (sur)utilisation des technologies où les spectateurs-adolescents sont
fortement invités à… ouvrir leur téléphone cellulaire ! Facebook s’impose sur scène, des
ordinateurs sont mis à la disposition du public, un guitariste joue en direct. Les trois interprètes sont aussi électrisés que mélodramatiques.
A performance about the (over)use of technologies in which the teen spectators are strongly advised
to… turn on their cell phones ! Facebook shares the stage, computers are available in each aisle, a
plugged-in guitarist plays live. The three dancers are as electric as they are melodramatic.

Tangente invite pour la quatrième fois le chorégraphe Brian Brooks, pour sa « virtuosité
expérimentale » (Eva Yaa Asantewaa). Explorant le corps en mouvement perpétuel, Brooks
s’exprime dans un amalgame de danses postmodernes formalistes, de sports extrêmes, parkour
et street dance. À couper le souffle, littéralement.

This is Tangente’s fourth invitation to choreographer Brooks, for his quirky “virtuosity with edge”
(Eva Yaa Asantewaa). In these on-going explorations of the physics of bodies in perpetual motion,
Brooks splices together disparate aspects of formalist postmodern dance, physical sports, parkour,
and street dance. Literally breathtaking.

They always herald a next wave. Montréal is truly a mecca for dance training, and each season we
open our stage to a small group of graduate contenders. Discover the propositions of these eager
dance-makers who have been selected by a jury of their peers.

Dans un espace visuel et physique finement délimité, des corps entrent et sortent jusqu’à se
confondre. L’ambiance sonore est planante, le contact à l’autre sensible et précaire. Aube nous
entraîne dans un univers poétique, où les corps et les formes apparaissent et se synchronisent,
dans les lueurs du début du jour.
In a physical and visual space delicately delineated, dancers enter and exit, indistinguishable from one
another. The soundscape is captivating, contact between performers sensitive but precarious. Aube
draws us into a poetic universe, in which bodies and shapes materialize and synchronize all in the
gentle glow of dawn.

L’installation de lumières de Noël recouvre le plancher. Très, très graduellement elles s’allument
et cinq corps s’éveillent. Un phrasé de danse hyper-précis et laborieux se répète. Créant un
lien étroit avec le public, cette composition est une méditation sur la vulnérabilité. Une danse
intime d’art minimal.
Christmas tree lights cover the floor. Very, very gradually they illuminate as the dancers begin to
stir. Five women embark on a repetitive dance phrase, rigorously precise and challenging to execute.
Creating a shared space with the audience, this composition offers a meditation on vulnerability.
An intimate dance inspired by minimal art.

Le Tératome est un acte chirurgical, une installation chorégraphique à trois. Une alchimie s’opère
entre lumière, musique et mouvement. Le corps se bat à l’intérieur avec une tumeur monstre, le
fœtus dans le fœtus. Comment mettre en scène le « langage humain » de la maladie ?
Le Tératome is a surgical act, a choreographic installation with a trio of performers. An alchemy
operates between light, music and movement. There is a combat within the body stemming from a
monstrous tumor, a foetus within a foetus. How is it possible to make a theatrical performance out
of the “human language” of malady ?

En compagnie d’un trio de danseurs singuliers, une créatrice examine l’identité masculine.
Leurs corps se révèlent à la rencontre des matériaux – lumières, ombres, sculpture d’accordéons,
structure caverneuse et membraneuse – d’où émergent des métamorphoses kafkaïennes.
Enfin, avec eux, elle pose la « question des hommes ».
In the company of three singular male dancers, a female choreographer examines the masculine
identity and poses the “man question”. These men’s bodies are gradually revealed through encounters
with various materials – light, shadow, a sculpture of accordions, a cavernous structure – from
which they emerge in a Kafka-esque metamorphosis.

A quartet of dancers and a musician set into motion the theme of air-as-metaphor. Heaviness and
lightness cohabit the contorted bodies of the dancers in surprising ways. Poetic Trois Paysages
plunges us into the air to reach the unattainable, to push limits and to fly. Breathe in its beauty.

Couvert de cheveux blancs emmêlés de la tête aux pieds, ce personnage étrange, fantomatique
et dompté devient une créature difforme à l’instinct animal. Inspirée par la tradition des histoires
de fantômes japonais, cette allégorie chorégraphique vous emmène dans un voyage introspectif.
She is covered head to toe with a tangle of white hair. The strange, ghostly figure is transformed
from disciplined mover to animalistic, unformed creature. Inspired by the tradition of Japanese ghost
stories, this choreographic allegory takes us on a journey into ourselves.

Au-delà du traditionnel bharatanatyam, ce solo de danse contemporaine indienne aborde
l’expérience urbaine et culturelle de chacun dans sa complexité intrinsèque. Entre émotion,

intensité à travers une esthétique d’une riche palette de mouvements.
Moving with and beyond bharatanatyam, this contemporary Indian solo strives to connect the
complex meanings and points of focus (mudhra / nritta) of urban and cultural experience. At the
convergence of emotion, technique and meaning, Meena Murugesan emanates a compelling intensity
which drives her richly textured movement aesthetic.

Cette pièce met en lumière la recherche personnelle et identitaire, un perpétuel monologue sur

A ritualistic soliloquy of inner musings, this dance sheds light on personal experience and self-identity.

Fascinée par la calligraphie japonaise, Jacinte Armstrong s’adonne à l’exercice délicat de la
transposition du geste de la main manipulant le pinceau en un mouvement de tout le corps.
L’expression et la respiration des danseurs incarnent « le vent et l’eau », métaphore de l’encre
sur le papier, alors que des images calligraphiques éclatantes sont projetées.
Jacinte Armstrong’s fascination with Japanese calligraphy becomes an insightful exercise in translating
the small hand dance of brush strokes into full body motion. The dancers’ movements and breath
incarnate the “wind and water” of ink and paper, along with vivid filmic images of the calligraphing
in process.

FLIGHT DISTANCE III : CHAIN SUITE HELEN SIMONEAU (MONTRÉAL)
Submergée de plaisirs cinétiques et de mouvements et qualités raffinés, Flight Distance dévoile
une danse formelle, humaine et sensuelle. Accompagnées d’une trame sonore percutante,
deux femmes sautent, glissent, ralentissent et tournoient en explorant leurs propres limites et
l’espace de l’autre. Superbement imaginatif.
Overflowing with kinetic delights and subtle movement textures, Flight Distance displays formal
dance-making with humanity and sensuousness. Accompanied by a percussive sound score, two
women bound, slide, linger and spin as they explore the boundaries of their own and the other’s
intimate space. Wonderfully inventive.
HETERO TEITA IWABUCHI & KAORI SEKI (TOKYO)
Du grec hétéros (autre). Deux danseurs élancés se confondent délibérément, s’enroulent, se
déroulent, s’entrelacent, se déplacent méticuleusement. Ensemble, Teita Iwabuchi et Kaori
Seki se meuvent très très lentement. Enveloppés par la lumière et le silence saillants, une
danse naît de ses méditations infimes sur l’espace, le temps, la forme et la relation.
From the Greek heteros (other). Two slender dancers shape-shift together with deliberation, furling
and unfolding, entwining limbs, delicatly gesturing. Teita Iwabuchi and Kaori Seki move ever so slowly.
Enveloped in sculptural lighting and silence, a dance transpires, composed of minute meditations on
space, time, shape and relationship.

contact improvisation et de solos nerveux, Su Hyun Kim et Jong Won Heo – partenaires

contradiction, mystère.
A theatrical dance of intimate “skinships”. Through the subtle twists-and-turns of duet contact
improvisations and emotionally over-charged solos, Su Hyun Kim and Jong Won Heo – life-andartworld partners – delve into psyches that are deeply scarred from lack of love. Death, tenderness,

Suite à la représentation du vendredi soir, le public est invité à rencontrer les artistes lors
d’une discussion animée par l’un des membres de l’équipe de Tangente. Discussion autour du
sens et l’esthétique de l’œuvre, du processus de création, de l’interprétation, la scénographie,
etc. Une vente de livres sur la danse, en collaboration avec la nouvelle librairie Formats, aura
également lieu avant le spectacle.
Following Friday night performances, we invite the public to meet the artists for a discussion hosted
by a member of Tangente’s staff. The discussions focus on the meaning of the work, its aesthetic qualities, the creative process, the performances, the set design, etc. There will also be a dance book sale,
in collaboration with the new Formats bookstore before the performance.

On Sundays, the kids reign supreme! These afternoon performances are the opportunity for children
and teens to discover contemporary dance and the fascinating worlds of the artists who create it. We
privilege families and offer them first row seating. We take good care of the youngsters, for they are
