C’est en avril 2002 qu’Alain Bédard passe une commande d’oeuvres à plusieurs compositeurs afin que chacun
compose et arrange une pièce originale, fournissant ainsi un répertoire exceptionnel conçu et interprété par un
ensemble de huit musiciens. Une idée novatrice provenant du désir d’engendrer des rencontres inédites entre
musiciens créateurs. Ici rien n’est figé, tout est flexible, interchangeable pour donner le Effendi JazzLab!

In April 2002, Alain Bédard approached several composers, asking each of them to compose and
arrange one original piece. These would then be reunited into one collection and performed by
an eight-man ensemble. An innovative idea, born of a desire to create an unconventional meeting of
musical minds. It’s a very open-ended concept, which is why we called it JazzLab!

Martin Auguste has been a regular member of
the Charles Papasoff Trio since 1995, participating in large-scale projects such as Tristan &
Iseult (Grands Ballets de Montréal), Catharsis
and Painless. A very active musician, he has
worked with Fred Fortin, Kenny Wheeler, Karen
Young, Kelly Jefferson, Thüryn Von Pranke,
Stephen Faulkner, Jocelyn Ménard, Alain JeanMarie, and George Mitchell, to name but a few.
This founding member of the
FACT collective of musicians
and composers can be heard
regularly on stage and CD
performing with many established artists, such as the
Montréal Jazz Big Band, Avalon,
René Lussier, Jean Derome, Yves
Léveillé, and Thom Gossage,
among others. In 2001, as a member of Eduardo Pipman’s quartet,
he won the Montréal International
Jazz Festival’s Concours de Jazz.
Frank Lozano teaches at McGill
University.
Considered one of the best alto saxmen in
Canada, Rémi has shared the stage with
such artists as Lorraine Desmarrais, Vic
Vogel, Michel Donato, Oliver Jones, Kenny
Werner, Marc Johnson, Seamus Blake,
and many others. He has recorded several
CDs, including Renaissance (Effendi) and
Tchat (Justin Time). Rémi teaches at
McGill University in Montréal.

Jazz Sextet. En 2001 il reçoit une
bourse et perfectionne son jeu
auprès du saxophoniste américain de réputation internationale
Chris Potter. Il a aussi participé en
2002 au Banff International Jazz
Workshop dirigé par Kenny Werner.
This multi-instrumentalist, arranger
and musical director can often be
heard as a sideman. His original,
polished sound is featured on the
No Name Jazz Sextet’s first CD
project. In 2001 he was awarded a
scholarship to study with internationally renowned American saxophonist Chris Potter. In 2002 he
participated in the Banff International Jazz Workshop directed
by Kenny Werner.

One of the most active trombonist on the
Québec jazz scene, Kelsley Grant is also a
founding member of the Jefferson/Grant
Quintet, winner of the OPUS award for Best
Jazz Album of 2000. Regularly sought-after by
the very best big bands and medium bands,
Kelsley is also an outstanding composer and
improviser.
Contrebassiste autodidacte, Alain
Bédard débute sa carrière musicale au

Aron Doyle s’est bien installé sur la
scène jazz montréalaise après ses
études à l’Université McGill.
Depuis, il a tissé des liens musicaux avec de petits comme de

Fresh from his studies at McGill
University, Aron Doyle became a
