A Water-Color
Low hidden in among the forest trees
An artist's tilted easel, ankle-deep
In tousled ferns and mosses, and in these
A fluffy water-spaniel, half asleep
Beside a sketch-book and a fallen hatA little wicker flask tossed into that.
A sense of utter carelessness and grace
Of pure abandon in the slumb'rous scene,As if the June, all hoydenish of face,
Had romped herself to sleep there on the green,
And brink and sagging bridge and sliding stream
Were just romantic parcels of her dream.

DISCOVER
THE COMMON SWIFT, Apus apus
Size : 16 cm. Wing span : 40 cm. Description : in flight the common swift is larger than swallows.
Brownish-black all over, it has a light spot below the chin. Its wings are very long and thin and in the
shape of a scythe. Its tail is short and indented (for information, swallows have much shorter triangular
wings, a white belly and a longer tail.)
The common swift is around from April to September and then migrates
to Africa, south of the Sahara desert.
It lives in towns and villages and feeds on insects captured in full flight. It
can fast for quite a long time during bad weather (slow-life mode).
Peculiarities : the common swift lives most of its life in the air, drinks in
full flight (the so-called water-bombing technique). It can spend the night
up in the air using air currents to rest. It nests in buildings' cavities.
In La Roche swifts nest in the church, among other places. On summer nights one can admire for hours their
dazzling stunts accompanied by shrill cries.
This information was taken from Evelyne Fusilier’s guide which is available at the Mairie in La Roche-Canillac.
