Para distinguirse de Taipei y Kaohsiung, las dos
principales ciudades de la isla china de Taiwán,
Taichung busca aumentar su proyección internacional a través de la cultura y el arte. Si en
2011 el francés Philip Rahm —con los paisajistas Mosbach y Ricky Liu— se hizo con el
master plan del Gateway Park, al año siguiente
se convocó otro concurso para desarrollar un
gran edificio, en el extremo norte del parque,
que albergará una biblioteca pública de 35.000
metros cuadrados y un museo de arte de 27.000.
De entre las cinco propuestas finalistas resultó
ganadora la de los japoneses SANAA, con diez
volúmenes porosos e intersecados, cada uno de
ellos destinado a un programa diferente.
In order to set itself apart from Taipei and
Kaohsiung, the main two cities on the island of
Taiwan, Taichung seeks to increase its international presence through culture and art. While in
2011 the French Philip Rahm – with the landscape architects Mosbach and Ricky Liu – won
the master plan for Gateway Park, the following
year a competition was called to develop a large
building, in the northern end of the park, which
will hold a public library of 35,000 square meters
and an art museum of 27,000. Among the five
finalist proposals the winner was that of the
Japanese SANAA, with ten porous and intersecting volumes, each one of them intended for
a different programmatic need.

De Rotterdam
Las tres torres que componen el complejo De
Rotterdam forman parte del plan de remodelación del antiguo muelle de Wilhelmina, en la
orilla sur del Mosa, y toman su nombre de uno
de los barcos de la Holland America Line que
zarpaban desde allí con emigrantes europeos.
Con 160.000 metros cuadrados de superficie y
150 metros de altura, el edificio (proyectado en
1997 y en construcción desde 2009) se ha convertido en el más grande de los Países Bajos.
Concebido como una ciudad vertical donde los
distintos usos —oficinas, apartamentos, hotel,
salas de conferencias, gimnasio, tiendas y restaurantes— están interconectados, el proyecto
parte de los conceptos de densidad y diversidad.
The three towers that make up the De
Rotterdam complex are part of the plan to
redevelop and revitalize the old Wilhelmina
Dock, on the southern shore of Mosa River,
and are named after one of the boats from the
Holland America Line that set to sail from that
point with European immigrants. With an area
of 160,000 square meters and 150 meters in
height, the building has become the largest in
the Netherlands. Understood as a vertical city
where the different programs – offices, apartments, hotel, lecture rooms, gymnasium, retail,
restaurants and cafés – are all interconnected,
the project takes the concepts of density and
diversity as points of departure.
