La principauté entend apporter sa contribution en lançant une initiative
pour la promotion de l'utilisation de bois certifiés en principauté et par
des actions de sensibilisation pour le grand public.
L'exposition « Richesse de la forêt tropicale », fruit d'un long parcours
foisonnant de découvertes, de rencontres, de partages dans les forêts
humides de la planète nous dévoile ces lieux fascinants mais très menacés,
souvent méconnus et peu compris.
Cyril Ruoso témoigne par ces photographies étonnantes d'un écosystème
unique mais aussi d'un mode de vie, la culture pygmée Baka dont le sort
est intimement lié à celui de la forêt. Avec ce voyage au cœur des forêts
tropicales, nous découvrons un monde que nous devons absolument protéger.
Wealth of
the tropical rainforest
More than 20% of greenhouse gas emissions are due to the destruction
of the tropical rainforests which leads to soil degradation, the depletion of
biodiversity and identity loss for the local populations.
The Principality wants to make a contribution by launching an initiative for
the promotion and use of certified wood in the Principality and by setting up
a public awareness campaign.
The exhibition “Richesse de la forêt tropicale” (Wealth of the tropical rainforest),
the result of a rich and diverse journey of discovery, encounters and sharing
in the rainforests of the world, unveils these fascinating but extremely
endangered sites, often little known and little understood.
With these amazing photographs, Cyril Ruoso not only shows us a unique
ecosystem but also a lifestyle: the Baka pygmy culture whose fate is closely
linked to that of the forest. With this journey into the heart of the tropical
rainforests, we discover a world that we must protect at all costs.

la disparition de la biodiversité, et la perte d'identité des populations locales.

Un des moyens les plus efficaces pour lutter contre ce fléau consiste à
donner une valeur économique durable aux forêts avec une gestion adaptée.
Une exploitation raisonnée permet de cibler les arbres en fonction de leur
essence et de leur âge, tout en respectant les zones riches en biodiversité
et les peuples qui y vivent. Elle permet ainsi à la forêt de se régénérer et
de dégager une valeur économique pour les exploitants forestiers et les
peuples autochtones.
Un des leviers d'action contre la déforestation consiste à produire,
commercialiser et consommer des bois certifiés.
La principauté souhaite par cette initiative devenir exemplaire dans la
protection des forêts tropicales et dans la lutte contre le réchauffement
climatique.

The association MC2D, with the support of the Prince Albert II of Monaco
Foundation, has decided to launch a campaign, in Monaco, to promote the
use of wood harvested from sustainably managed forests. This campaign is
entitled “Monaco makes a commitment against deforestation”.
One of the most effective ways of combating this scourge is to give the
forests an economic value through appropriate management. Rational
forestry practices enable us to target species and the trees depending on
their age, whilst at the same time respecting biodiversity-rich areas and the
people living there. Consequently this enables forest regeneration and generates
economic value for the indigenous people.
One of the means of combating deforestation consists of producing, marketing
and using certified wood.
With this initiative, the Principality aims to set an example for the protection
of the tropical rainforests and the fight against global warming.

L'association MC2D, avec le soutien de la Fondation Prince Albert II de
Monaco, a décidé de lancer une opération pour promouvoir l'utilisation,
à Monaco, de bois issus de forêts gérées durablement. Cette opération
s'intitule “Monaco s'engage contre la déforestation.”

Le Centre d'Excellence Sociale (CES) pour les Forêts du Bassin du Congo est
un projet soutenu par la Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco.
Géré par The Forest Trust (TFT), une organisation à but non lucratif qui aide
les entreprises forestières à améliorer la gestion de leur forêt, le projet a pour
but de former des experts sociaux africains de haut niveau, capables de :
• Participer les populations locales et autochtones à la gestion de leur forêt
• Amener les sociétés forestières à mettre en œuvre un programme social
solide leur permettant d'obtenir la certification FSC (Forest Stewardship
Council) qui valide une gestion durable des forêts.
A l'issue du projet 20 étudiants de niveau bac + 5, provenant tous des pays
du Bassin du Congo, ont reçu une formation théorique de haut niveau
combinant des matières telles que l'anthropologie, le droit des peuples
autochtones, la cartographie participative, mais aussi une formation pratique
de terrain au sein des sociétés forestières partenaires du projet.

Excellence (CSE)
for the Congo
Basin Forests
The Centre of Social Excellence (CSE) for the Congo Basin Forests is a project
to which the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation lends its support.
Conducted by The Forest Trust (TFT), a non profit-making organisation that
helps forestry companies to improve the way in which they manage their
forest, the goal of the project is to train high-level African social experts,
capable of:
• To involve the local and indigenous populations in the management of their forest
• Inducing forestry companies to implement a sound social programme
enabling them to obtain FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification
which confirms sustainable forestry management techniques.
At the end of the project, 20 postgraduate students from the Congo Basin
countries were given high-level theoretical training combining subjects such
as anthropology, the rights of the indigenous peoples, participatory mapping
as well as practical field training with the forestry companies involved in the
project.

Council (FSC) promotes
the sustainable management
Sa mission fondatrice est d'apporter un schéma de certification véritablement
indépendant et crédible garantissant que les forêts sont gérées d'une
façon écologiquement viable afin de répondre aux besoins sociaux,
économiques, écologiques des générations actuelles et futures.
Ce schéma exige par exemple le respect des lois du pays, des droits des
populations autochtones et des travailleurs, la préservation de la diversité
biologique, des ressources hydriques, des sols, des paysages, en particulier
dans les Forêts à Haute Valeur de Conservation.
Le bois issu des forêts certifiées FSC est ensuite transformé dans des
entreprises certifiées FSC afin de garantir sa traçabilité tout au long de la
filière. Le produit fini porte un label FSC qui garantit au consommateur
final qu'il est issu de forêts gérées de façon responsable.

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international non profit-making
organisation established in Toronto in 1993 to promote the sustainable
management of the forest. Its founding mission is to provide a truly independent
and credible certification mechanism guaranteeing that the forests are
managed in an ecologically viable manner in order to meet the social,
economic and ecological needs of present and future generations.
For example, the mechanism calls for the observance of the laws of the
country, the rights of the indigenous populations and of workers, the preservation
of biological diversity, water resources, soils and landscape, in particular in
High Value Conservation Forests.
Wood harvested from FSC certified forests is then processed by FSC certified
companies in order to ensure its traceability throughout the production
process. The end-product bears the FSC label which guarantees the final
consumer that the wood comes from responsibly managed forests.
