First English Evangelical Lutheran Church was established in 1837 as the first
English-speaking Lutheran Church west of the Allegheny Mountains. The
cornerstone of the present building in downtown Pittsburgh was laid in 1887 and
the building consecrated the following year. The instrument is located at the front
of the nave just behind the choristers in the choir loft. The beautiful existing
stained mahogany casework was refinished and used for the new instrument.
Polished tin speaking pipes from the sixteen and eight-foot principals of the
Grand Orgue and Pédale divisions are used in the façade. The Grand Orgue and
expressive Récit are located at the top of the organ from where they speak easily
into the nave, while the Positif is located just behind the façade in a position close
to the choristers. Of particular interest is the fact that all three manual divisions
have plena based upon eight-foot principals. The specification was designed for
the worship needs of the congregation and for use in outreach programs offered
to the downtown community, especially during a series of noonday recitals in
Lent.

is a company based on pride of workmanship and skill. Even after
our installation was completed, Casavant regularly came to check
on our satisfaction with the entire process.
—Pastor David P. Gleason, February 23, 1993
The people who have been most intimately involved with acquiring
a new organ for First Lutheran Church have been completely
satisfied with the work of Casavant Frères. We are delighted with
the instrument. Even members of our congregation who have no
particular interest in music have shown great appreciation for what
they hear ands

has been one of the most thoroughly professional and competent
companies I have ever dealt with in my ministry. Our requests for
help or more information were always greeted with cooperation and
a quick response. All of the employees we dealt with were
courteous, helpful and highly skilled.
