Re-Thinking High School Online Symposium
Intentional Conversations around Moving Forward with High School Redesign
Date: Thursday, January 21, 2016
Time: 9:00 am – 3:15 pm (Mountain Standard Time)
Cost: $20 for any or all online conversations
“If you think that the future will require better schools, you’re wrong.
The future of education calls for entirely different learning environments.”
Knowledge Works Foundation
This interactive symposium highlights the work of schools across Alberta that are demonstrating ‘next practice’
thinking; schools that are implementing strategies and approaches and conversations aimed at transforming the high
school experience for students and teachers. Building on the province-wide dialogue stimulated by educators across
the province, we would like to invite you to participate in these online conversations.
This one-day online symposium will begin with an introductory keynote, followed by four 60-minute break-out
sessions. These sessions, which will be developed and led by passionate and innovative educators from across the
province, will be comprised of a 15-20 minute presentation followed by a 40-minute facilitated conversation. This is
an exciting day of networking and professional learning, and we encourage you to facilitate opportunities for your staff
to participate in this event. You may attend one or all of these online conversations.
In addition, each presentation will be archived online with a conversation guide so that all educators across the
province will be able to engage in these conversations. This online symposium provides a great professional learning
opportunity for educators, administrators, and interested jurisdiction leaders from across the province.

Creating a Collaborative
Culture - Supporting
Professional Learning for
High School Redesign
9:45 am or 2:15 pm
Phase 1 School
Essential to supporting the change in culture that is a part of High School
Redesign, is the importance of providing opportunities for staff to achieve
greater collaboration - to truly see themselves as a community of educators
who support learning in all its forms. Specific strategies to support new and less
experienced teachers who join us "mid-stream" in our High School Redesign
journey are also part of the challenge. At Catholic Central, we have devoted
time and resources to ensuring that staff have these opportunities to
collaborate and celebrate during "team" attendance at conferences, to share
expertise and support each other during our staff meeting/PD days, and to
experiment and innovate with cross-curricular projects.

succès
11:00 am or 2:15 pm

Engaging Students in the
Data Cycle
11:00 am and 2:15 pm
The process of engaging students is evolving at the high school level. This
conversation will explore how students have a critical role in the data
collection, use, and interpretation cycle. As a strategy, engaging students
throughout the cycle can be a pathway to delving deeper into data and
results in student ownership and involvement in the high school setting.

Planning
11:00 am or 1:00 pm
Chinook’s Edge School Division is in the process of reworking their approach
to learner pathways and career planning. Their vision is that all students
leave high school with a clear plan to transition to post-secondary or the
world of work, with confidence in their ability to implement or adapt their
plan throughout their lives as they and the world around them change.
Development of a scope and sequence, defining the roles of the career
team, and connecting students to opportunities such as dual credit and offcampus education will be discussed.

FrancoSud.
