In 2009, Oberthur Technologies should generate a moderate but positive growth which is a clear achievement given the tough market conditions. The card industry is less impacted than some but is not immune to this crisis. Beyond the direct impacts on growth and profitability, it could generate a mid-term threat in the slowdown of the pace of adoption of new technologies. In these times, it is tempting to curb investment in innovation. On the contrary, and as is shown by the tremendous success of smartphones in 2009, bringing new services and new values to customers is probably the way out of such crisis. Therefore, we, at Oberthur Technologies continue to drive our innovation efforts and are more than ever dedicated to working with our business customers and partners in order to help them bring more value to their customers. What are you expecting for 2010? We have demonstrated a solid and stable business in 2009 and our objectives for 2010 are to resume growth, continue expanding our service offering and contribute through our innovation to shape the future of the industry. In the coming year there are some major events and trends that could have a long term impact on our industry. In particular, we will be closely watching: -Development of the Nice project which could confirm that the right ecosystem has been found for the development of NFC. -Increased awareness in the US of the importance of deploying EMV cards for payment. -Acceleration of the development of digital identity. Our future innovations and business strategy will be driven by these trends and many others. Our industry is at a turning point with many exciting developments to come in the next year. The innovations we will showcase at Cartes are the products and solutions of the future. Newsletter | Oberthur Technologies | November 2009 News from the Card Systems Division Xavier Drilhon, Managing Director of the Card Systems Division, Oberthur Technologies How would you define the Card Systems Division’s business in just a few words? The Card Systems Division is the world’s second largest provider of security and identification solutions based on smart card technology and associated services for mobile, payment, transport, digital TV and convergence markets. Through innovation and excellence in service our mission is to continue to grow to be number 1 or 2 worldwide in each of our market segments and deliver value to our business customers with profitable business models and clear benefits for end users. Innovation is at the core of our culture and an integral part of the Division’s long-term strategy. With over 350 engineers in five R&D centers across the globe, we continue to turn our innovations into business opportunities for our customers while improving the daily lives of end users. What new products are you introducing at Cartes this year? With nominations for Sesames awards in both the Hardware and Loyalty categories Smart Lumière is a dual interface EMV payment card lights up when it is in the field of the contactless reader to inform the cardholder when the transaction is processing. SIMSense, the first motion detection and handset independent SIM Card was nominated in the Mobile Category for a Sesames Award. The ability to associate motions with different services or applications has many exciting possibilities which can create value-added services for Mobile Network Operators and their customers. We have also received a nomination in the Software category for Chrysalis Fly EAL4+ which is the first dual interface payment card to reach the Com- mon Criteria standard’s most rigorous accreditation for financial instruments, the EAL4+ security level. We will also showcase our Smart Services offer which is composed of new value-added services for issuers and their cardholders. Some examples of this innovative range of services include Smart PIN, which allows the secure delivery of the cardholder’s PIN code to their mobile handset via SMS. Another exciting service is Smart One Card which enables issuers to provide cardholders with an online interface to customize the design of their own banking card. These nominations are examples of our leadership in innovation and show that we are in the driving seat to keep moving ahead in the industry. Do environmental concerns from your business customers or end users play a role in your offering? Today environmental issues are a key factor for our clients in all market segments, from mobile operators to financial institutions. There is also a growing awareness from consumers who take into account environmental choices in their daily lives. This year at Cartes, we showcase our Smart Eco range of eco-friendly payment cards, SIM cards and packaging. Our commitment goes beyond the product itself. It is part of the way we operate the company. We have taken various initiatives in order to reduce our environmental footprint. For example, all our manufacturing sites will have received the ISO 14001 certification by year end. For mobile operators, we have developed EcoSIM, a new SIM card format that is half the size of a normal SIM. This new SIM card is manufactured with 50% less plastic and reduces the environmental footprint by half compared to a classic SIM. This means going from 16g of CO2 to 8g of CO2 generated per card. Until now, SIM cards were produced on sheets of plastic using a credit card size format. Our patented process allows for the manufacturing of two SIM cards on the same amount of plastic instead of only one. Imagine the impact of cutting the quantity of plastic used by half for the 3 billion SIM cards shipped annually! For financial institutions we have developed a range of cards providing environmentally friendly alternatives to PVC. Although recycled PVC cards have been used around the world for some time now, we have created more options which take into account the different needs of issuers including commercially proven options such as PET-G to cards made from natural materials that biodegrade. These cards and the entire Smart Eco range will be available at our stand at Cartes this year. Stunning visual effects not only provide the cardholder with continual visual interest, but also helps to create a real link between the card in their wallet and their bank: recognizable, memorable, desirable. The card’s material, design and form also act as a communication tool with the cardholder every time they pay, turning their card into a real marketing tool for the bank. Smart Plastics enable issuers to create compelling, provocative, visually stimulating payment cards. Smart Strata Dramatic designs can be created by separating the card design into component layers. By printing these layers on both clear and opaque plastics, it is possible to make parts of the designs “float” above the other elements. Smart Vibrant Smart Vibrant gives cards a leading edge by replacing the standard white plastic used to create cards with a diverse range of plastic colours.Cardholders can instantly identify the card in their wallet just by looking at its coloured edge. Smart Reflect Smart Reflect holographic cards have a metalized insert that sits between the card’s plastic layers to create dynamic light effects on the card’s surface. Smart Glacia Smart Silhouette Smart Crystal Smart Touch Smart Glow Smart Aroma The choice is clear. Smart Glacia cards provide a comprehensive choice of ink effects and innovative finishes for use on transparent cards. Oberthur Technologies Smart Crystal translucent cards use high specification IR blocking technology to ensure machine readability. Smart Glow uses special ‘day glow’ and phosphorescent inks to offer a payment card that glows in the dark. Smart Eco Oberthur Technologies range of recycled, PET-G, BioPVC and PLA cards. Oberthur Technologies Smart Silhouette cards can be designed with small feature changes to full card functionality or more radical changes for companion cards. A real interaction with the cardholder can be achieved by moving card design elements from the background onto the surface of the card. Smart Aroma provides a comprehensive range of specialist scented inks printed on the surface of the card to supplement the visual design. Newsletter | Oberthur Technologies | November 2009 9 C A SH P R O T E C T I O N Latest Innovation in Cash Protection ICSD L3: ATM In-Cassette Staining Device This intelligent system protects cash inside of the ATM cassette in the event of an attack by spraying the banknotes with an indelible purple ink, which renders the money worthless to the criminals. The money is protected against various forms of physical attack such as ram raids and forced entry. The solution is modular and can be activated by a number of pre-defined triggers - tilt, impact, gas detection sensor, liquid, temperature, light, unauthorized ATM door opening. Further inputs can be integrated as the customer requires. Why ICSD L3? Surveillance systems, alarms, locks and robust safes are insufficient to prevent attack Our solution denies the ‘prize’ to the offender. This makes the robbery pointless L3 helps to protect your business from losses arising from the ATM attacks: damaged buildings and equipments, repairs and construction works, law suits, psychological traumas of employees, increase in insurance cost, and loss of business due to bad publicity A simple, reliable and upgradeable solution L3 can be easily adapted to protect against new type of attacks, be fitted to new cassette types or provide higher level of security L3 is designed with security and ease of use as the top priorities. The intelligent firmware enables ATM operators to integrate L3 with little or no change to their existing processes. 10 Newsletter | Oberthur Technologies | November 2009 C O N V E RG E N C E NFC Village The emerging market of NFC services is taking a turn. Pilots conducted worldwide during the last five years showed the great interest of end-users but also demonstrated the limits of a one-to-one approach. The challenge is now to develop an interoperable and standard solution that end-users can use whatever is their mobile operator, bank, transport authority or preferred shops. The pre-commercial NFC launch which will take place in Nice in early 2010 illustrates perfectly this new step as it prompts French operators, banks, retailers and transport authorities to work together to give birth to a full-range of interoperable NFC services. In this context, participating actively in the development of specifications that could lay the basis of a global standard, Oberthur Technologies has developed its NFC Village concept. The underlying philosophy of Oberthur Technologies NFC Village is to demonstrate our comprehensive answer to specific needs of mobile operators, banks, transport authorities and retail groups. We offer turnkey solutions including SIM cards, applications as well as NFC servers and OTA platforms for these 4 types of actors. Ranking as a trusted supplier to more than 5,000 banks, mobile operators and transport authorities, benefiting of 10 years of experience in OTA platform supply and familiar with all kinds of personalization we have a true expertise to answer the needs of the NFC ecosystem. Discover the NFC Village and Oberthur Technologies online authentication solutions at Cartes 2009 Newsletter | Oberthur Technologies | November 2009 11 C O N V E RG E N C E Secure authentication The convenience of internet is driving a cultural evolution in which e-shopping and e-banking are more and more becoming part of everyday life. Online fraud is therefore escalating. Financial losses due to cybercrime are a worrying reality; they should not stay a fatality. To counter attack that risk, banks, in particular, need to deploy strong authentication mechanisms. Recent studies demonstrate that users would use even more online services if they felt more secure. Expert in security solutions for a changing world, Oberthur Technologies has helped secure financial services for more than 20 years. Oberthur Technologies now provides a complete range of authentication solutions for granting web access and making secure online transactions. 12 Newsletter | Oberthur Technologies | November 2009 MOBILE The Killer Mobile Applications In a fast moving mobile communications industry, the mobile network operators (MNO) are constantly being challenged to stay competitive. The challenges range from declining voice revenue and ARPU (Average Revenue Per Unit) to cost pressure from competition and struggle to retain and acquire customers. Being close to its customers and listening to their needs, Oberthur Technologies has not only developed a suite of innovative mobile products, solutions and services that fit customers’ needs, but has dedicated its energies around creating new mobile opportunities that will SIMplify customers’ businesses. Today, the company has more than 30 killer SIM Applications that are aimed at responding to customers needs and help them increase rev- enue, reduce churn, optimize costs and generate POS (point of sales) traffic. SIM Applications not only add smart features to the SIM and the handset, but being loaded on the non-volatile memory of the SIM card, it allows the MNOs to fully benefit from the memory space of the card. Additionally, the applets provide them with more possibilities for SIM customization. In short, SIM Applications provide value to the customers. DATA The SIM Applications offer: Applications by Family Each of the families offers revolutionary applications that are critical in ensuring competitive advantage to the MNOs. Personal Data Provide end users with advanced tools to manage data on the SIM Roaming Optimize end users roaming costs and network connections Network Ensure a better connectivity that results in higher ARPU and lower churns Call and SMS Management Enhance possibilities for incoming and outgoing communications for end users SIM Browsing Provide and promote services to end users through Over The Air (OTA) with dynamic interoperable menus Mobile Advertising Generate revenues through advertising by promoting the SIM card as a space for rent Secured Services Offer new secured services for any handset Smart Card Web Server (SCWS) Offer web-like user interface and the access to multimedia and convergence applications Newsletter | Oberthur Technologies | November 2009 13 MOBILE Success Stories Busy Call (Call and SMS Management Family), SIM Shortcut (SIM Browsing Family), IMEI Tracking (Network Family) and Dual IMSI (Network Family) have been successfully deployed and being extensively used in Europe, Latin America, South Africa, US and Middle East. Busy Call When the recipient rejects a call - Suggests a predetermined SMS - Send SMS to the caller - Stores five predetermined SMS – customizable by the end user -If the caller has a hidden number, the application suggests to send an SMS by entering a phone number or by searching the phone book SIM Shortcut The SIM menu is generally difficult to find on a handset, which limits the use of SIM-based services. With SIM Shortcut, the user simply needs to dial “746” and access SIM-based services. The call will be aborted by the application and the caller will be automatically directed to the SIM menu. The user can change the shortcut number himself. IMEI Tracking When changing handsets, end users lose their personal settings, such as SMS-C number, MMS and a WAP configuration. As a result, hotlines get very busy, creating huge call center costs for mobile network operators. The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) Tracking by Oberthur Technologies provides mobile network operator with IMEIs on the field for automatic configuration of the connection parameters. When the SIM Card is inserted in a new handset, the IMEI Tracking application will detect the change of device and send a data message with IMEI and IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity) to the mobile network operator. When the IMEI is received, the mobile network operator can perform a remote update of the new mobile phone. End users can enjoy all the network services with no delay. Dual IMSI Active mobile phone users have challenges to manage both professional and personal phone calls. To address these challenges, most users opt for two phone connections in two different handsets. With Dual IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity) application, end users can have two different mobile lines in one SIM card. Through the SIM menu or at the handset start-up, the user can switch from one line to another without switching off the handset. When applying the switch, the end user can decide to forward the calls from the inactive line to the active one. 14 Newsletter | Oberthur Technologies | November 2009 IDENTITY Certifications for ID products in 2009 The Common Criteria Certification is standard and internationally recognized for IT products. Smart Eco Recycled PVC cards are manufactured using recycled PVC. Recycled PVC is considered to have the same properties as virgin PVC in terms of lamination, ink adhesion and shelf life, while it minimizes the use of natural resources. Smart Eco PLA cards are made from a fully synthetic polymer derived from corn starch, a renewable material. Fully biodegradable and compostable, the Smart Eco PLA card is ideal for gift and commercial applications. Oberthur Technologies has committed to making the principles of United Nations Global Compact part of its strategy, culture, and day-to-day operations and internal processes. The company has received ISO 14001 certifications for nearly all manufacturing sites around the world, the remaining will be certified by the end of this year, and is working on a range of projects to improve its environmentally friendly products and solutions offering. Smart Eco Bio PVC cards display very similar properties to standard PVC but contain additives that help break down the PVC polymers at a much faster rate than normal. Under the right conditions, BioPVC will biodegrade over a period of up to five years. Oberthur Technologies respects the environment.
