President’s Note
With a new year well underway and winter in full swing (well,
fuller for some than others, depending on your postal code), it is
a good time to look back on what has happened since our last
newsletter and look ahead to the exciting events coming up for
the membership.

Dr. Janice Harvey, CASEM
President
We asked you to complete a membership survey and we were thrilled with the high
response rate – what did you tell us? – well you felt the Annual Conference was good
value both from a learning and a monetary perspective. You also provided feedback in
terms of location and I am thrilled to announce that the 2012 Annual Meeting will be
“CASEM Okanagan” held in June in Kelowna.
The Journal was rated highly again for the quality of articles, and you provided a complete list of suggestions for future “Timely Topics” seminars. We listened and are looking at Timely Topics for 2012 in Anti-Doping/Supplements and Running Injuries. Our
newsletter received moderate interest with some question as to whether it is providing
what you really want. So, we would really like to hear from you with specifics around
what you would like to see in the newsletter and in other areas in communication like
the website, which is undergoing ‘renovations’ as we speak. The survey will also be
used extensively as we head into our Spring strategic planning session which will direct
CASEM’s future for the next 3-5 years.

We are pleased to announce the new Position Paper and Discussion Paper on “Abuse,
Harassment and Bullying in Sport”, developed by members of the WIISM Committee,
namely Eileen Bridges, Laura Cruz and Margo Mountjoy. This is a timely paper in that
CASEM has just been approached to sign on to support an initiative to reduce physical
abuse in children, developed by the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, Child Welfare League of Canada and many others (400 currently).
CASEM has also been directly involved with the updating and revision of the Canadian
Physical Activity Guidelines through collaboration with CSEP, Canadian Pediatric Society, as well as the original developers of the Guidelines the Canadian Public Health
Agency. The Guidelines were officially launched on January 24 2011.

President’s Note continued...
Recently, I was asked to present at the FISU Educational Congress held in Eurzurum Turkey, just prior to the FISU
Winter University Games. I presented on doping control in a major winter games, highlighting the work of
VANOC, CCES, WADA and the IOC during the Vancouver Olympics. From this, FISU is now interested in planning an educational workshop for host countries on medical care and doping control in order to better help prepare the host organizational committees in these areas which have historically not been the strongest aspect of
games preparation.
Some upcoming events worthy of highlighting in your blackberries, are the Advanced Sport Medicine Course, April
9-10 in New Westminster, The FIMS/CASEM Team Physician Course July 11-12th and the Diploma exam which
will be held October 16th in Ottawa.
The Advanced Sport Medicine Course (ATPC) has been run twice and has received extremely high ratings in the
evaluations. The unique, case-based format provided the foundation for the success and the practicality of the
course. The new course will feature a new “mass casualty” scenario to help prepare team MD’s for major games
experience in a summer setting.
The FIMS/CASEM Team Physician course will be held just prior to the ASA in NFLD, and promises to provide a
very comprehensive, and practical approach to the various sport medicine conditions that any of our members
may encounter when dealing with athletes in a games setting.
If winter is going on a bit too long for your liking and you don’t have the luxury of ski-in, ski-out to work...then set
your sights ahead for a visit to “The Rock ”. Our next ASA will be hosted by our welcoming colleagues from the
‘east coast’, in St. John’s NFLD, July 14-16...right smack in the middle of their week of summer!!!
We, as a Board will be meeting in the spring specifically to review Horizon 2012 strategic plan. That initial goal 5
years ago was to review our existing mandate and to set new goals for future growth. This was the time that the
new “Supra-chair” role was introduced, and the various committees were aligned into like-minded streams for the
Supra-chairs to liaise with. We will be inviting all committee chairs to this meeting to get their feedback regarding
the outcome of this reorganization and thoughts on the future direction of CASEM.
The success of this organization relies heavily on your feedback. We welcome your suggestions and feedback.
Please feel free to contact myself ([email protected]) , head office ([email protected]), or Andy
Marshall (chair of Communications Committee) ([email protected]) ? At any time.
See you in St. John’s!!! “Some good By!!!”

Advanced Team Physician Course
APRIL 9-10, 2011
JIBC INSTITUTE
NEW WESTMINSTER BC
This course is designed by CASEM members for CASEM members. It is like
an ATLS, ACLS and Sport First Responder course all in one. The course is
well organized with a combination of seminars and hands-on sessions
which makes the days fly by. The instructors are knowledgeable and share
their experiences to help us become better prepared for major event coverage. The course offers unique experiences... where else can you practice
extricating someone from a bobsleigh while maintaining c-spine precautions and performing CPR?
This is the best course I have ever taken, is well worth your time
and money and is a must for anyone doing event coverage.
You won’t regret it!

Canada Games - Halifax 2011
For two weeks this February, Halifax played host to Canada's finest young winter
athletes. The east coast's famous hospitality was on display for athletes, mission
staff & medical personnel from across Canada. The city set the tone with various
outdoor concerts, delicious restaurants and enthusiastic crowds. Athletes competed at 13 venues in 22 sports, including the very popular outdoor Canada Games
Oval on the fields of the Halifax Commons, and the Canada Games Centre.
Jack Ceaser
The games were centered around the World Trade Centre in downtown Halifax, with the athletes staying in surrounding hotels. The medical personnel were a generous mix of local and
out-of-town professionals, as well as a few students & residents. Led by Drs. Sonja McVeigh
and Tina Atkinson, we were proficiently steered through early morning shifts, numerous
SCAT2's, and stomach viruses (okay - some of us stayed clear of this better than others). For
the most part, the weather cooperated and gave us good East Coast weather. The coldest
place was St. Margaret's Bay Arena (for short track speed skating & figure skating).
Despite a fairly busy schedule, much fun was had by all, including trips to Peggy's Cove, Lobster dinners, touring historic Halifax, and partaking of the numerous local pubs. The two
weeks elapsed very quickly, and by the end many were talking about the next games in both
Sherbrook (in summer of 2013), and even in Prince George (winter) four years away!
One of the Games staff recently recounted to the medical volunteers a quote she had read
from a local reporter, who adeptly summed up the spirit of the Games by stating that "Halifax
has its groove back."

Profile of a CASEM Volunteer
CASEM -Volunteering
helps shape the future of
Sport Medicine Doctors
My first exposure to CASEM was before I was even in medical school. Being the sport medicine keener that I was (and
still am!) and towards the end of my kinesiology degree, I was given the wonderful opportunity to volunteer at the
CASEM annual conference in 2005. That event was a wonderful and meaningful experience for me. It brought my interest in sport medicine to an even greater height. But more importantly, it allowed me to meet many talented and highly
regarded sport medicine physicians from Ontario and Canada, all of whom I continue to be in contact with to this date.
As each and every one of us can attest to, finding your way within medicine is highly dependent on the people you have
guiding you and educating you along the way. Without realising it, that opportunity to volunteer at that conference before even being in medical school connected me with many sport medicine physicians who took me under their wings
and have helped me in more ways than I can even describe-all of whom are members of CASEM.
I am currently a 1st year family medicine resident in Ottawa. As I reflect on my four years of medical school (also in
Ottawa), I am proud to see the leaps that the University of Ottawa has made regarding sport medicine awareness, and
conversely, how CASEM continued to help me and fellow med students grow as future doctors. Recognizing that perhaps sport medicine was under represented within the curriculum, it was great to witness the creation of the school’s
Sport Medicine Interest Group. I later became the chair of this group for 3 consecutive years, and a large majority of
the speakers who helped me to make it into the group that it is today were from CASEM. As a student, on 2 separate
occasions, I was also fortunate to be able to act as a standardized patient for the CASEM diploma exams. Once again
this opportunity served as a great educational tool and networking experience for a student eager to learn more about
sport medicine.
Having recently graduated from medical school, I am in a great place to encourage all medical students potentially interested in sport medicine to become a CASEM member. For the many aforementioned reasons, being a member of
CASEM as a medical student served as an extremely useful tool in my quest to pursuing sport medicine. And it can do
the same for other students as well. With CASEM’s significantly reduced fees for students, and their welcoming atmosphere, I can’t think of any reason why a student should not get involved.

One Step Back and Two Steps Forward…
In this first issue of the CASEM newsletter for 2011, I’d like to take this opportunity to highlight some of the
achievements of the Pediatric Sport and Exercise Medicine Committee during the past year and bring attention to
some exciting things planned for 2011.
2010 was a productive year in terms of position statements. The much anticipated publication of the statement
“Physical activity recommendations for children with specific chronic health conditions”, that was created jointly with the
Canadian Pediatric Society. The statement is available on the CASEM website and discusses the current recommendations with respect to sport and physical activity for children and adolescents with asthma, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, hemophilia and cystic fibrosis. We hope that by dual publication, information regarding chronic pediatric
illness and sport will reach as many pediatric caregivers as possible. Future statements that are currently in development include recommendations for sport in the pediatric diabetic and body checking in hockey.
At the June 2010 annual conference in Toronto we had a few changes within the committee and the current committee includes: Merrilee Zetaruk, Kristin Houghton, Iris Marshall, Laura Cruz, Anthony Luke, Elise Martin, Robert
Lee, Elaine Joughin, Erik Koelink, Claire LeBlanc, Michelle McTimoney, Erika Persson, John Philpott, Devin Peterson,
Navin Prasad, Laura Purcell and Bill Mackie. The annual 5K run was held and despite the rainy weather, all who participated enjoyed the course along the waterfront and $500 was raised to support the Toronto Harborfront Community Youth Center. The committee is looking forward to the annual conference in St. John’s this July and hopes
to see many of you out for the 5K run/walk again and enjoy the sights and sounds of St John’s and Signal Hill!

KIDS CORNER - LE Coin des enfants
Looking forward to 2011 brings many educational opportunities for pediatric sport and exercise medicine with not only the annual CASEM conference, but also sessions held by the Canadian Pediatric Society (CPS) this year. The first opportunity is being held in early March at the Lifelong Learning in Pediatrics Conference in Whistler BC with Dr Laura Purcell discussing many contemporary sport medicine
issues including concussion and return to play. The next is at the Canadian Pediatric Society annual
meeting in Quebec City in June, with a hands on session by Drs LeBlanc and McTimoney on pediatric
shoulder issues. There are also a number of francophone sessions with respect to common pediatric
sport medicine problems as well as sport nutrition.
Finally, for those medical students and residents who are CASEM members and interested in pursuing
further training in Pediatric Sport and Exercise medicine, there is a Pediatric Sport Medicine Elective
grant available thru the CPS. Please contact the CASEM pediatric sport medicine committee for further details.
Best wishes for an active and exciting 2011 for everyone!!!
