But is this just a fad or does it represent a lasting enthusiasm? Are perfumers being inspired by new varieties, or are new ways of using materials influencing new creations incorporating warm, reassuring notes? N°36- Novembre / Décembre 2015 140-181 PARFUMERIE - EC36.indd 162 Expression A n analysis of new developments in the male fragrance sector shows a notable increase in the woody family between 2014 and 2015. “The historic balance between the different families (woody, oriental, citrus and fern) has been disrupted this year, with woody notes gaining the upper hand, increasing from 23% to 43% in terms of the numbers of new products launched,” explains Maryline Bonnard, a trend scout at Le Musc & La Plume. This is a development that is more evident in the male market than the female market, where floral notes dominate. It is also something that has been observed by a number of distributors: “The domination of woody notes in the perfumery sector continues to increase, particularly where dark, smokey woody notes, driven by the Middle Eastern market, are concerned,” observes Ryan Liegner, Head of Marketing at Berjé, a global distributor and producer of essential oils and aromatic chemicals. What do we hope to achieve with these woody notes? • An interpretation for all markets Woody notes remain a safe bet when it comes to the perfumer’s palette. “They have a certain universal appeal, explains Givaudan perfumer Oliver Pescheux. Woods guarantee an element of authenticity, a return to the roots, just like the slogan “Eat apples“ managed to strike a chord at the time.” This appetite is strongly driven by demand in the Middle East, where powerful, persistent notes are particularly popular, as well as by the success of key woody fragrances such as One Million and Invictus by Paco Rabanne, both of which lead the field in terms of new Cosmétique 24/12/15 15:54 s r Focus PERFUMERY 163 sûre à l’époque toucher une corde sensible ». Universality, yes, but also richness, adds Hervé Fretay, Head of Marketing for Fragrance Ingredients at Givaudan, in terms of the possibilities it represents where perfumers are concerned; indeed, the woody family is a very comprehensive one comprising natural, synthetic and even speciality options. “They bring a sense of presence through the backbone of the fragrance, and unlike other materials, their presence is felt across all levels - in the top, middle and base notes of the fragrance, providing the link between the earth and the flowers.” vetiver, patchouli and papyrus,” explains Robertet perfumer Jérôme Epinette. IFF perfumer Alexis Dadier highlights “the clean aspect” that white woods can create, as opposed to more animalistic notes. “When you say “white“ you’re downplaying the power of a material - it’s a way of softening it,” concludes Olivier Pescheux. Can wood also evoke other colours? “A study performed as part of IFF’s Scent Emotion programme revealed that the panel associated cashmeran with the colour blue,” explains Alexis Dadier. The association with an unexpected colour can introduce an element of poetry, as is the case with Eau de Cartier Vétiver Bleu. • A touch of colour Whether light, transparent or dark, woody notes can bring different nuances to a composition. The notion of white wood is becoming more widespread, conjuring up “the very smooth aspect of sandalwood and the purity of cedar in opposition with darker woods such as • Texture Woody notes will, of course, take the fragrance in a certain olfactory direction, but they can also be used in their technical capacity, to create a certain De la sécheresse (cèdre, bois ambrés stridents), de l’humidité (mousse de chêne, patchouli), une texture résinée (pin, fir balsam) aux accents frais. Woods can certainly add texture and depth to a creation. OLIVIER PESCHEUX, GIVAUDAN JERÔME EPINETTE, ROBERTET Top of the Woods 2015 They say that behind every great fragrance there lies a new raw material. Is this true of woods? Are there new ingredients emerging to stimulate a sense of creativity? The thought of exploring new lands, bringing back new, aromatic species from the four corners of the world and extracting the wood from well-known trees such as the peach tree or the bitter orange tree or ylang ylang wood would fill Olivier Pescheux with excitement, but there is another avenue that appears to be more widely explored: “capturing the fragrances of new species, such as ALEXIS DADIER, IFF The global information on cosmetics & fragrances November / December 2015 - No.36 140-181 PARFUMERIE - EC36.indd 163 24/12/15 15:55 164 PARFUMERIE En 2015, la recrudescence des bois rime davantage avec classicisme. « Les distillations moléculaires de vétiver permettent d’avoir une très belle qualité comme celle de Vetiveryo de Diptyque, utilisée en overdose à Hinoki (Japanese cypress), or Okoumé wood, using the Headspace technology makes it possible to innovate whilst at the same time protecting species,” explains Hervé Fretay. The resurgence in woody notes that we have observed in 2015 has more to do with traditionalism. Vetiver, cedar and patchouli still feature heavily in press releases, underlining the timeless nature of these great classics. • Vetiver and romanticism Alexis Dadier is particularly fond of “this unique material that lies somewhere between the air and the earth. Vetiver is both airy and earthy and holds a certain mystery that is part-freshness, part-elegance. Nowadays we can work with vetiver hearts, which are easier to use than an original, natural vetiver, since the latter sometimes has a stronger effect than desired.” Olivier Pescheux, meanwhile, explains that “molecular distillations of vetiver help achieve a very high level of quality, as is the case with Vetiveryo by Diptyque, in which it is overdosed at 25%.” The vetiver class of 2015 clearly N°36- Novembre / Décembre 2015 140-181 PARFUMERIE - EC36.indd 164 Expression Focus 25 % », explique Olivier Pescheux. With the emphasis very much on freshness, the combination of vetiver with an aromatic citrusy accord in Vétyver Le Galion is particularly successful. Mythique Vétiver by Mizensir, meanwhile, is characterised by its freshness and persistence, whilst Eau de Cartier Vétiver Bleu offers a different interpretation of the material, this time with an element of minty freshness. Jérôme Epinette, for his part, has chosen to work with warmer tones in the form of a smoky, tobacco-like guaiacum-vetiver combination for Byredo’s Westbrook. a comeback and being obtained from other sources, both in Australia and elsewhere. In the case of Santal Royal, for example, Guerlain claims to have established a partnership with an undisclosed Asian forestry. Lalique Living, meanwhile, showcases an enveloping, vanilla-like sandalwood with a feminine feel that contrasts with fresh, aromatic top notes. • Sandalwood - the scent of exoticism Sandalwood is making its great comeback in its natural form, going back to its roots with bold, warm, sensual, enveloping Santalum album. Research has long focused on compensating for shortcomings and offering a variety of molecules to obtain the olfactory profiles sought. The price of synthetic sandalwood has led to it being incorporated in detergents, with a positive impact on the persistence of the fragrance on laundry. Nowadays, natural sandalwood is making • Cedar - the essay After the “fullness of sandalwood, cedar will bring a greater sense of verticality to the fragrance, explains Olivier Pescheux. There is Virginia and Texan cedar, of course, which has an element of pencil lead about it, and Atlas cedar, with its leathery, animalistic notes.” Staying along these dry, powdery lines, Electric Wood, Room 1015 retransposes the idea of the wood of the symbolic Gibson electric guitar. Cèdre Atlas by Atelier Cologne revisits this cedarwood by contrasting it with fruity notes, again adopting a new approach to treating the wood: “Cedar can sometimes be difficult to work with in terms of top notes, Cosmétique 24/12/15 15:55 Focus PERFUMERY 165 Bois et réflexion environnementale Wood and environmental considerations Sourcing éthique et nouveaux terroirs Ethical sourcing and new lands Toujours dans le souci de préserver les ressources, chaque société de composition a maintenant établi son programme de sourcing, établissant un lien direct avec les producteurs. Reflecting the concern for preserving resources, all composition companies have now outlined their sourcing programme, establishing direct links with producers. This is a trend that has been confirmed by Mario di Lallo, Head of Products at TFS, who explains that, Suite / To be continued page The global information on cosmetics & fragrances November / December 2015 - No.36 140-181 PARFUMERIE - EC36.indd 165 24/12/15 15:56 166 PARFUMERIE de mine de crayons, et le cèdre Atlas au notes animales et cuirées ». • Patchouli, le roman historique De nombreux chypres ont fait leur and fractionation helps modernise the wood without the annoying pencil-like aspect,” explains Olivier Pescheux. Robertet is also offering a number of middle notes and codistillations such as Bois d’Encens, a natural speciality obtained from the co-extraction of an incense extract with Virginia cedar essence, with cedar offering the unusual characteristic of creating reactions during the extraction process that alter the smell of the product. • Patchouli - the historic novel 2015 saw the emergence of a number of chypres, bringing with them this star material for adorning a floral accord. “The patchouli middle notes will be strongly felt, leaving more room for fruity, floral notes,” explains Alexis Dadier. La Panthère Extrait, Sisley Soir d’Orient, Colony and L’Heure Attendue by Patou, One Love by Scherrer and Signorina Eleganza by Ferragamo, meanwhile, showcase the chypre aspects of the material. In the case of Byredo’s Oliver Peoples, Jérôme Epinette chose to develop “a very fresh, very citrusy N°36- Novembre / Décembre 2015 140-181 PARFUMERIE - EC36.indd 166 Expression Focus apparition en 2015, emportant avec eux cette matière star pour habiller un accord floral. Qu’il soit à la mode occidentale (avec un accord patchouli, cypriol, castoreum, costus) ou plus typé Moyen-Orient, très animal et naturel, cette note « titille une partie de notre patchouli,” and the emphasis was also very much on freshness with Penhaligon’s Blasted Health, which combines the purity of Clearwood® with the essence of patchouli. • Oud and Orientalism The oud trend was thought to be in decline, but in actual fact that was not at all the case. This note, which has in fact become a family, is establishing itself in its own right as a classic structure, just like the oriental or the chypre. Whether it is more Western in style (with a patchouli, cypriol, castoreum or costus accord) or more typically Middle Eastern - natural and very animalistic -, this note “tantalises a part of our brains with an addictive side,” explains Olivier Pescheux. Bois d’Oud by Miller Harris, Oud Satin Mood by Francis Kurkdjian, 1001 Ouds by Annick Goutal, Oud Couture by Carolina Herrera, Another Oud by Juliette has a Gun and Oud Saphir by Atelier Cologne are all examples of this. Guaiacum wood is, however, used as an alternative to oud in Miksado by Jeroboam and Gaïac Mystique by cerveau avec un côté addictif », explique Olivier Pescheux. « Et, Givenchy, both smoky, leathery, woody fragrances. • Amber-woods, or Twitterature Having been developed through research and pre-empted for their lasting effects, these woody notes have invaded male compositions and now female fragrances too. Bringing a sense of power and ensuring an identifiable sillage, they have become “the key to mass success”, explains Alexis Dadier, who distinguishes between two categories with this family. The first of these, “soft amber-woods (such as Ambroxan and Iso E Super), which are enveloping and musk-like,” feature in Accord Illicite by Givenchy, which combines patchouli, vanilla, amberwoods and musks. “On the other hand there are dry, vibrant amberwoods like Amber Xtreme™, which highlight the languorous aspect of a vanilla or other indulgent notes, creating the vibrato of a lyrical voice by immediately jumping out in the top notes.” In Ambre Tigré by Givenchy, for example, they are used to create a more modern interpretation of the historical Ambre 83 Cosmétique 24/12/15 15:56 Focus PERFUMERY 167 Bois et réflexion environnementale Wood and environmental considerations 175 “over the course of the past 18 months, we have observed a growing demand for sandalwood, with clients now more concerned with using sustainable ingredients and seeking more precious woods.” Givaudan, by means of the Ethical Sourcing programme, sources vetiver from Haiti, patchouli from Borneo and Sulawesi, and sandalwood from Australia. Robertet has also established a presence in Haiti and New Caledonia, whilst IFF-LMR has recently obtained certification for its Haitian vetiver network from IMOSwiss AG. One new approach to innovation involves transporting varieties to another land, as was the case with sandalwood, the Indian source of which has virtually disappeared. Mysore sandalwood has long suffered as a result of poaching and deforestation, meaning that new sources had to be found. Santanol, which specialises in the plantation of Indian sandalwood in Australia, therefore offers an ethical, ecological, legal and sustainable approach to sourcing sandalwood. “The company owns some 2,300 hectares on which it plants, cultivates and harvests this parasitic tree which feeds off other trees in order to grow. This being the case, we have to plant two trees for one sandalwood tree,” explains Managing Director of Santanol Rémi Cléro. “The land is organised so as to cultivate trees of different ages, thus ensuring the sustainability of future harvests, with different qualities depending on their exposure, thus offering a wide range of sandalwoods at a wide variety of prices.” TFS also highlights the ecological aspect of the sector, producing Australian and Indian sandalwood using renewable energy and recycling its water. “Biotechnology is opening up new avenues, explains Hervé Fretay, and this work that was initiated in the days of the Roure acquisition has been complemented with the buyout of fermentation experts Soliance in 2014 and enzymatic reaction experts Induchem in 2015.” This work also includes the development of Akigalawood®, “an enzymatic reaction on a fractionation of patchouli whereby the structure of the wood is modified to enrich it and to give the patchouli a certain spicy resonance.” Firmenich has also launched natural ingredient Clearwood®, produced by means of white biotechnological processes, using a renewable source, namely cane sugar, which creates a modern, more transparent woody note of patchouli and contains 30% patchoulol. Jérôme Epinette uses them for their modernity and their freshness, explaining that “these are very punchy, very volatile notes that lift the fragrance, and at the same time they boost the base notes whilst embellishing the raw aspect of natural woods.” Olivier Pescheux likes to assimilate them with “an arrow shooting through the fragrance,” providing an element of dynamism that he incorporated in Kouros Silver, containing 30% dry, sandal-like woods across a dozen or so products, interpreted in the form of octaves, with each emphasising different aspects: “Iso E will bring transparency, OKoumal® will add a sense of vibrancy, Amberkétal ® will reveal its true colours on the skin, Ambermax® will create a “bang,“ and so on.” The strength of the fragrance can be adapted to reflect the consumer’s tastes, but it is important to be able to dose the ingredients appropriately. Indeed, “people have different levels of sensitivity when it comes to perceiving these woody notes,” the perfumer admits. How will the woody notes of tomorrow be composed? Taking a different approach to developing the material as an ingredient, be it by means of fractionation, the highlighting of new aspects or the discovery of new sources, is a good excuse for revisiting the great classics. “We have explored all of the great woods in turn and it is now time to study each of them in greater depth, since really getting to grips with a material can give the perfumery sector a new lease of life,” explains Jérôme Epinette excitedly. There is, of course, another possible approach, this being formulation - twisting the ingredient using unprecedented accords. “In the past, sandalwood and oud were worked alone as a unique olfactory element, but nowadays it’s becoming increasingly important to create synergies between woods and other materials in accords such as “ylang sandalwood and rose vetiver“ in order to bring another dimension to the composition, an element of texture to these warm, sensual notes,” explains Ryan Liegner. ■ rose vetiver provide a starting point from which to create a new chypre?” This structure has also inspired Olivier Pescheux, who claims that “the chypre is immediately dated by oakmoss. In light of the legislation in force, which gives us a little respite, it would be no mean feat to succeed in creating a new chypre with this material.” There is, of course, one last avenue that has not yet been exploited, this being “showcasing the properties of the wood,” as Olivier Pescheux suggests. Indeed, as Managing Director of Santanol Rémi Cléro confirms, “sandalwood does have anti-inflammatory properties that it would be interesting to exploit.” Whether in its natural, synthetic or active form, wood clearly still has more to give in terms of using its spiritual and seductive notes to create new bestsellers.
